SAT/ACT Prep

Do you struggle to make sense of the reading comprehension passages written in Ye Olde English? Wonder what the heck is a dangling participle? (No, it has nothing to do with ragged cuticles.)  An em-dash? (No, it’s not a road race.) I can teach you the answers to these … and other … mysterious questions you’ll encounter on the SAT and/or ACT.  I have some great strategies, and I’ll help you discover the ones that work for you.

Course Instruction/Writing Competitions

I have created the curriculums for and taught courses in Persuasive, Narrative, Editorial, and Critical Essay Writing, as well as Journalism. Several of my students have won writing awards from the New York Times and Scholastic writing competitions.

Tutoring in Writing & Literary Analysis:
Middle & High School & College

There are so many working pieces to an essay: grammar, syntax, style, choosing a thesis, staying on topic, topic sentences, introduction and conclusion paragraphs, revision. Making matters worse, there’s a deadline (gulp!) looming. With my help you’ll find all of this — plus the literary and historical analysis — a lot less daunting. I will read your papers carefully and provide thoughtful, instructive comments and suggestions. I act as “translator:” when you don’t understand the assignment or your teacher returns a paper with a grade but no actionable feedback, I’ll explain what you need to work on in plain English. I’m a stickler for details, but I have a sense of humor and I never use a red pen.

 College Application Essays
Guidance and Editing

Need help starting ... or finalizing …your college application essays? I can help you craft a unique, compelling essay that showcases your strengths and individuality. I will ask you questions, share a few tricks to jumpstart your essay, and provide guidance on appropriate topics. (Don’t worry if you don’t have one; you will after one one-hour session.) Together, we will take into consideration what the admissions folks are looking for and use some marketing savvy, but in the end it's all about the amazing, real you. I won't write it for you ... but I'll do everything in my power to help you write an essay that will do you proud. My past students have gained admittance to some of the most competitive schools in the country, including Harvard, Yale, Smith College, Wellesley College, MIT, USC, NYU, Boston College, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Tufts, Tulane, and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor (my alma mater!).

Business Writing/Copywriting

Need to write better memos? An advertising campaign, annual report, or attention-getting personal profile? I can help.  We’ll work to improve your clarity, style, delivery, and effectiveness so that your message hits home. I often work with professionals who are “math people” or ESL. I’ve worked with an architect from Croatia, a scientist from Japan, and a sociology professor from Israel.  Are you a career changer? I can show you how to write cover letters that will get you noticed.

Website/Social Media Copy

I’m all over your website copy. From attention-getting headlines, benefit-oriented content, targeted messages, story telling, and image-promotion to the nitty-gritty details … I can help you get it done well … or do it for you.  I will take the time to get to know you and your goals and the image you want to present. Then, we’ll consider SEO (Search Engine Optimization), who your audience is, and what you’re trying to achieve … so you can achieve it!

Higher Level/Professional Writing

I've helped MBA and PhD candidates with their theses and doctors with their research proposals. Together we’ll organize your thoughts and express them accurately. I will ask questions, edit, clarify, explain, and suggest.

What to expect.

My Methods

When you meet me, you’ll discover I’m passionate about good writing, open to trying different methods suitable to the individual student and assignment, patient, kind, funny… but I will also insist that you do your best and complete your assignment. I will edit, explain, suggest, question, act out a scenario (ask to see my dangling participle pantomime!) and cheer you on, but I will not write your essay for you. (Professional writing is a different story.)

Virtual Lessons Rock!

If you live in the Greater Boston/Metro West area, we can meet in person (post Covid-19, of course).  However, I welcome students from anywhere! We can exchange words, documents, edits, and ideas via Google Docs, Email, Word, Zoom, Skype, FaceTime, or phone … or any combination of these.  I’ve worked with students from all parts of the US and from as far away as China.

Homeschoolers Welcome!

I can help you create an ELL curriculum, or supplement the one you have.

The 15-Minute Rule

To see if we’re a good fit, you can send me a document or assignment for a free 15-minute evaluation. This way I can see how you write and what you need to work on and you can decide if my suggestions and style suit your needs. After that, we can discuss rates and sign an agreement outlining services and expectations.
